Monet Mondays: Electric Ladies

Monet's Melodies Playlist here

For the second installation of Monet's Melodies... THE FUTURE SOUNDS FEMALE.

pictured: Janelle Monae - 'Archandroid' cover art.

Music has gotten me through life like nothing else, it fills me with energy, productivity and passion.

I’m dedicating this last week in Women's Month March to the Electric Ladies!

Afro beats, House and Dancehall are all intrinsically Black genres reclaiming Electronic!

When they say ‘The Future is Female”, these are the sounds I envision.

Firstly, the Bajan New Releases:

Ch’AN - Anytime

Released March 13th, 2021.

Ch'An delivers a lighthearted love song, produced by the complex Shai Bascombe.

Light musicality mixed with mischevious lyrics about her favourite, most beloved 'wasteman'. I think all of us girls can relate to a toxic man you can't get enough of.

Faith Callendar - Baddie

Released March 20th, 2021.

"Baddie' is a power track about female empowerment and sexual liberation. Ultra-catchy hook and popping cover art which highlights the lyrical content.

Faith rides the beat with her classic dancehall flow while she 'talks her shxt' and educates on the art of being a modern woman.

My ‘Party for One’ Playlist

These tracks are my personal favourites to feel like I've stepped on the scene. Listen to these while you get ready for the function post-Covid or to relax with your social distance clique on the beach.

The feminine musicality transistions from day to night seamlessly.

Amaarae - Sad Girls Luv Money

Released November 12th, 2020.

Amaarae coyly expresses 'I really like to party' as she opens the floor to a transcendental 3:16 minutes of light keys and a delicate Afro beat drum which pairs perfectly with her angelic vocals.

I also feel like 'I cannot control my body' when I hear this track, it's really addictive.

Lous and The Yakuza & Joey Badass - Amigo

Released January 15th, 2021.

Effortlessly cool French lyrics sprinkled over a synths and drums. Lous and the Yakuza and Joey Badass come together for a perfect summer Jam.

Sonically, it feels like a perfect response to the 2016 hit 'Controlla' Futuristic production propelling it into a timelessness.

Ungodly Hour - Chloe X Halle

Released June 12th, 2020.

The titular track is a perfect synthesise of R&B and House music. produced with Disclosure - it transforms the message of female empowerment in a way that reminds us we are powerful and imperfect.

It also speaks on boundaries of people who may love us but do not love themselves enough yet to do it right.

Aluna - Body Pump

Released April 30th, 2020.

Aluna (From AlunaGeorge) gave us many solo projects last year, including a collection of remixes. Body Pump is lively track which allures you into a dance. Nostalgic chords and her iconic vocals make an instant party.

She is also very vocal on social media about the importance of reclaiming Electronic culture. follow her conversation here.

Kelela + Nidia - Blue Light (Nidia Remix)

Released October 5th, 2018.

An earlier release than the other tracks, this Electric Ladies collection wouldn't be complete without Kelela.

This track is included on another collection of remixes of her past songs. This track powers up more uptempo Afro Beat drums to alchemise the melancholy of the original.

The lyrics speak of becoming free and the beat breakdown expresses it even farther.
